Thunbergia Alata/Black-Eyed Susan Botanically known as Thunbergia alata from Acanthaceae family. Common names are Black-eyed Susan, Chota Thunbergia etc. It is a perennial semi-evergreen flowering vine & it requires trelling or chain like fencing or arbors for growing over it.  It can be grown in hanging pots/containers and it have ring of black in the center with yellow petals color flower.

It a fast-growing, long-flowering, friendly creeper, an herbaceous perennial climbing plant. It is a general favourite as it is not fussy about soil, needs only moderate water, is mostly evergreen and covers ugly places beautifully. It is easy to care, the medium green leaves are a little coarse and grow opposite to one another. They can be either heart-shaped or a kind of lanced arrowhead shape.  This vine blooms flowers all summer but can continue all year in warmer areas.

MAXIMUM HEIGHT – It can reach 6-8 meter height.

BLOOMING YEAR – Almost Year-around flowering in warmer region, in cooler region it flowers around 7-8 months in a year and go to dormancy in winter.

GROWING TIPS – It can grow almost in all type of soil and it can easily grown in any Indian Climatic condition.

  • Plants grow very quickly and should be given a strong support to climb on.
  • For fast growth it needs support, the more support it will grow very quickly.
  • It can grow either in full sunlight or partial sunlight is also okay to grow.
  • For lush green & bushy appearance better to plant it in slightly bigger pot than the present pot.
  • After 20-25 days you can transplant it into your permanent location in full bright light condition.
  • It can also grown in bushy condition, if planted in pot and by regular pruning.
